St. Bernard Port, Harbor & Terminal District Boasso Intermodal Facilities
BKI was selected by the St. Bernard Port, Harbor & Terminal District to design the site clearing and restoration of a section of the Chalmette Terminal for reuse by Boasso International for use as an industrial tank maintenance facility. The site was utilized as a marshalling yard for trucks delivering and picking up refurbished transport tanks after they have been cleaned, inspected and repaired by the operator.
The firm designed and managed the disposal services, demolition of portions of existing pot lines and related structures (excluding four framed buildings), utilities, drainage improvements, site paving and filling pot lines with granular materials and compacted Class I Base Course (12” thick) and concrete floor with reinforcement for four buildings earmarked to remain and courtyards in between.
BKI also provided preliminary and final plans, specifications and cost estimates as well as construction administration services for the complete restoration of this industrial site to serve the needs of the new tenant.
Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding Plant Expansion & Improvements Master Plan
BKI was selected by Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding, Inc. to provide a master plan, construction plans and specifications, construction administration and resident inspection for expansion of their Westbank production facility for the cruise ship fabrication platform.
The project included the 150,000 SF Covered Slab Area (CSA) II Building with 200-ton & 150-ton cranes, the 116,000 SF Blast/Paint Hall, the Panel Shop with a 100-ton crane, and the 250,000 SF CSA Outfitting Building with a 30-ton crane.
The project also included new sheetpile bulkheads, relocation of the existing carpentry building, new gantry crane rails for production crews, a new ramp for launching the offshore platforms after landside assembly is complete, and dredge and fill to create approximately 14 acres of new land surface and to improve approximately 13 acres of existing land. The project also included dredging a new dry dock pit.
BKI assisted with preparing the mitigation and environmental permits necessary to secure construction permits from state regulatory agencies and the US Army Corps of Engineers for the shipyard expansion, including conducting an environmental assessment and a wetlands delineation.
St. Bernard Port, Harbor & Terminal District Arabi Termina Dock No. 1 Rehabilitation
BKI was selected by the St. Bernard Port, Harbor & Terminal District to provide design and construction management services to replace the existing Dock No. 1 structure at the Arabi Terminal.
The project included the rehabilitation of a 90-year-old dock apron and warehouse, increasing the slab live load capacity of the dock to the modern port requirement and providing new warehouse facilities. The project consisted of the demolition and construction of a new 800’L x 100’ W dock.
The dock structure was designed for a combination slab live load of 1,000 PSF and 26 kip wheel load. BKI provided the design for a new 26,027 SF warehouse located on the dock apron setback 60 feet from the dock edge to allow the for material handling operations.
The warehouse was designed for 140 MPH (three second gust) wind load and included an adjacent rail siding for loading/unloading general cargo into rail cars. BKI also provided the design for the fire sprinkler system in the 26,027 SF warehouse. A rail mounted crane along the slip face was also included in the design of the project. The crane was used to load and unload the material from the docked vessels.
BKI provided construction administration services including submittal and shop drawing review, pay application review and processing, site inspection, as built services and close out of the project using LADOTD capital project requirements. BKI also provided all the necessary permits for construction of the project from the Corps of Engineers, Levee Board and other regulatory agencies.
